Which License Type Fits Your Team?
Every Geomagic Design X license is configured with one of three activation methods. The activation determines how the license is bound to a machine or shared across your team. The software capability is identical — pricing and portability differ.
The license is tied to a single named workstation and is activated online via Hexagon's license server. The lowest-cost option, available on every Design X tier including Go.
The license travels with a Geomagic-branded USB dongle. Plug it into any Windows machine and Design X runs — no internet required after install. Same list price as ONA on Plus and Pro tiers; dongle hardware is sold separately.
A pool of seats lives on a network license server (Hexagon RMS). Any team member can check out a seat as needed — the seat returns to the pool when they exit. Premium pricing reflects the shared utilization. Not available on Design X Go.

What's the difference between ONA, OFD, and NWA?
ONA (Online Named Activation) ties the license to a specific computer using online activation — lowest cost, no hardware key. OFD (Offline Dongle) uses a USB dongle so the license travels with the dongle to any machine; ideal for offline / air-gapped use. The dongle is sold separately at $550. NWA (Network / Floating) hosts a pool of seats on your license server so multiple team members can share licenses concurrently — premium pricing reflects shared utilization. Design X Go is ONA-only.
What's the difference between Design X Go, Plus, and Pro?
Go ($1,900/yr ONA) is the entry tier with core scan-to-CAD tools, ideal for occasional users and simpler parts. Plus ($4,190/yr ONA/OFD or $5,450 NWA) adds enhanced modeling, scanner probing, and direct Hexagon/FARO/Scantech integration. Pro ($7,280/yr ONA/OFD or $9,460 NWA) is the complete unrestricted toolset — automated wizards, advanced organic surfacing, and the only tier supporting NWA at full feature parity — for daily professional reverse engineering.
Subscription or perpetual license — which is better?
Subscription (annual) is lowest entry cost and includes updates and support during the term — best if you need short-term or project-based access. Perpetual license + 1st year maintenance is a higher one-time investment ($4,990 to $28,660) but you own the license forever; you renew maintenance ($900 to $4,370/yr) only if you want continued updates. Perpetual usually breaks even versus subscription around year 3.
Can I get a free trial before purchasing?
Yes. Geomagic Design X offers a 14-day fully-functional free trial. Request access through Rev1 — we'll get you installer access and provide a guided onboarding session so you see results on day one.
Does Design X work with our existing scanner?
All three tiers accept scan data files from virtually any 3D scanner without direct connection — import STL, OBJ, PLY, E57, and dozens of native scanner formats. Plus and Pro add direct in-software control of scanners from Hexagon, FARO, Scantech, and others for a seamless capture-to-CAD workflow.
What CAD systems does Design X output to natively?
Design X uses LiveTransfer to push complete history-based parametric models directly into SOLIDWORKS, Siemens NX, Solid Edge, Autodesk Inventor, PTC Creo, and Pro/ENGINEER. It also exports IGES, STEP, PARASOLID, JT, and SAT for universal compatibility.
Can I upgrade from Go to Plus or Pro later?
Yes. Geomagic Design X is structured for tier upgrades. Contact Rev1 and we'll coordinate the upgrade with Hexagon — applying any credit from your existing subscription toward the higher tier.
Do you bundle Design X with Control X for inspection workflows?
Yes. The Design X / Control X Inspection Suite combines reverse engineering and dimensional inspection at a bundle discount — e.g. $30,404 ONA Pro suite vs. $38,767 buying separately. Suite-tier maintenance renewal is $4,636 ONA. Education suites are also available.
