The "Mesh Optimization" feature is a post-processing function that enhances 3D scan data by simultaneously smoothing and sharpening the results. Unlike functions that perform only a single operation, Mesh Optimization works to eliminate surface noise while preserving fine, sharp details. You can adjust its intensity from 0% to 100% and apply it through multiple iterations if needed. This function is particularly effective when the original scanned data has a small point distance, such as a 0.2mm resolution scan of tire parts.

From left to right are original data / 20% / 50%/ 100% optimization.

The effectiveness of the "Mesh Optimization" feature can be noted as it successfully eliminates surface noise (when applied at 100% optimization) while retaining the sharpness of intricate details, such as the edges of letters.
If the original model has a large point distance (meaning less detailed data), applying a high "Mesh Optimization" intensity can lead to a loss of existing detail, resulting in blurred features. The provided example further illustrates this point.

When applying the same optimization intensity across a model with 1mm resolution, details like those on feathers become difficult to discern at 100% optimization. This further illustrates that high optimization on low-resolution data can lead to detail loss.
This function simplifies the process of achieving better results. For high-resolution scans, it's recommended to use higher optimization intensities, while lower intensities are more suitable for low-resolution scans. However, it's not recommended to apply mesh optimization at all for resolutions exceeding 1mm.
