High performance filaments such as PEEK and PEI absorb moisture from the air, and they are far less tolerant of it than everyday materials. Damp high temperature filament foams in the nozzle, prints with voids and rough surfaces, and produces weaker parts. How a PTC heater works
A PTC (positive temperature coefficient) heater uses a ceramic element whose resistance increases as it warms. It draws less power as it gets hot, so it limits its own output. That makes it a good fit for warming a closed filament compartment.
Installation tips
Switch off and unplug the printer, remove the spool and let the compartment cool. Photograph the heater connector and wire path, fit the new heater in the same location, and secure the leads clear of the spool and filament feed. Run filament heating once to confirm it warms.
Good practice with high temperature filament
The filament heater keeps a loaded spool in condition. It is not a substitute for drying a spool that has been left open: dry PEEK and PEI thoroughly before you load them, then let the heated compartment hold them dry while you print.
