TPU Filament
Flexible, rubber-like, and tough. TPU bends, stretches, and bounces back while resisting abrasion, impact, and many oils — the go-to for gaskets, grips, phone cases, wearables, and any part that needs to flex instead of snap.
What is TPU filament?
TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) is a flexible, rubber-like thermoplastic elastomer. It bends, stretches, and returns to shape, absorbs impact, and resists abrasion, tearing, and many oils and greases. It comes in a range of Shore hardnesses (commonly 85A–95A), from soft and squishy to semi-rigid.
TPU is the material behind gaskets, seals, grips, phone cases, vibration dampers, and wearables. Its flexibility makes it more challenging to feed and print — it prints slowly and best with a direct-drive extruder — but it needs no enclosure and produces durable, resilient parts unlike any rigid filament.
TPU vs PETG vs rigid filaments — how to choose
Choose by how much the part needs to flex:
Softer Shore hardness = more flexible; harder = easier to print and more structural. Pick the hardness to match the part.
Printing TPU successfully
- Print slowly — 15–30 mm/s avoids buckling and jams, especially with softer grades.
- Direct-drive extruder preferred — Bowden setups struggle to push flexible filament.
- Nozzle ~220–240 °C, bed ~40–60 °C — no enclosure needed.
- Minimal or no retraction — too much retraction jams flexible filament.
- Dry before printing — TPU absorbs moisture and strings when wet.
