What is SimuBone filament?

SimuBone is a specialty filament developed to mimic the appearance and handling characteristics of human bone. It's designed so that printed anatomical models look bone-like and can be drilled, cut, and handled in a way that approximates real bone — supporting surgical planning, pre-operative rehearsal, and medical education.

It's used to produce patient-specific anatomical models from CT or scan data, letting clinicians plan procedures and practice on realistic geometry. SimuBone is a model/simulation material, not an implant or regulated medical device; suitability for any clinical use should always be confirmed against the manufacturer's documentation and your own validation.

SimuBone vs standard filaments — how to choose

Choose by whether bone-realistic handling matters:

SimuBoneBone-like look and drillability for realistic surgical rehearsal. Best for surgical-planning and training models.
PLACheap, easy, high detail — fine for visual-only anatomical models. Best when realistic drilling/handling isn't needed.
Resin (SLA)Highest detail and smooth finish for display anatomy, but brittle and not bone-like to drill. Best for presentation models.

Reach for SimuBone specifically when the model must behave like bone under tools — call (248) 707-2950 for guidance and validation resources.

Printing SimuBone successfully

  • Follow the manufacturer's profile — SimuBone is a specialty material with vendor-specific settings.
  • Keep filament dry for consistent results.
  • Prepare accurate anatomy — model quality depends on clean CT/scan-to-mesh conversion.
  • Tune wall/infill to match the bone structure you're simulating (cortical vs cancellous).
  • Validate before clinical use — confirm any procedural suitability with vendor documentation.
