PPSU Filament

The toughest of the sulfones. PPSU (polyphenylsulfone) combines high heat resistance, exceptional impact toughness, and outstanding resistance to hot water, steam, and repeated sterilization — the sulfone of choice for medical, aerospace, and autoclave-cycle parts.

What is PPSU filament?

PPSU (Polyphenylsulfone) is an amorphous high-performance thermoplastic in the sulfone family, and the toughest of the three (PSU, PES, PPSU). It offers high heat resistance, outstanding impact strength, inherent flame retardancy, and superb hydrolytic stability — meaning it shrugs off repeated steam sterilization and boiling water without cracking or losing strength.

That combination makes PPSU a staple for reusable medical devices, aerospace interiors, and plumbing/hot-fluid parts that must survive many autoclave cycles. As an amorphous polymer it warps less than semi-crystalline high-temp materials, but still needs a high-temperature printer, heated chamber, and thorough drying.

PPSU vs PSU vs PES — how to choose

Within the sulfone family, choose by toughness and sterilization demand:

PPSUToughest, best repeated-sterilization and impact performance. Best for reusable medical and autoclave-cycle parts — premium.
PSUHigh heat and rigidity, transparent, good hydrolytic stability, lower cost. Best general high-temp sulfone.
PESHigh heat and excellent hot-water/steam resistance, inherently FR. Best for sustained elevated-temperature service.

When parts face many sterilization cycles or impact, PPSU is the sulfone to reach for.

Printing PPSU successfully

  • High-temp printer — high-temperature hotend and heated chamber required.
  • Dry thoroughly — sulfones are hygroscopic; moisture ruins strength and clarity.
  • Heated chamber for low warp and strong interlayer bonding.
  • Strong bed adhesion and slow, hot printing.
  • Follow grade-specific profiles from the datasheet.
