PPA Filament

High-performance nylon for hot, demanding parts. PPA (polyphthalamide) is a semi-aromatic nylon with higher heat resistance, strength, and stiffness than standard PA — often carbon- or glass-filled — built for under-hood automotive, structural, and elevated-temperature applications.

What is PPA filament?

PPA (Polyphthalamide) is a semi-aromatic, high-performance nylon — sometimes called high-temperature nylon. Its aromatic backbone gives it higher heat resistance, strength, stiffness, and chemical resistance than standard PA6 or PA12, with a high glass-transition temperature that keeps parts stable where ordinary nylon would soften.

PPA is frequently sold carbon- or glass-fiber reinforced to push stiffness and dimensional stability even higher, making it a metal-replacement candidate for under-hood automotive, structural brackets, and hot functional parts. Like all nylons it's strongly hygroscopic and must be dried; it prints at high temperatures and benefits from an enclosure.

PPA vs standard nylon vs PC — how to choose

PPA is the high-temperature upgrade to ordinary nylon:

PPAHigher heat, strength, and stiffness than standard nylon; often fiber-filled. Best for under-hood and hot structural parts — needs high temps and drying.
Standard nylon (PA)Tough, wear-resistant, low friction, easier to print than PPA. Best for gears and moving parts at moderate temperature.
PC (Polycarbonate)Very strong and heat-resistant, more brittle than nylon, transparent grades. Best for rigid high-heat structural parts.

For maximum stiffness choose a PPA-CF or PPA-GF grade — ask about availability at Rev1.

Printing PPA successfully

  • Dry aggressively. PPA is highly hygroscopic — dry before and during printing.
  • High nozzle temperatures — typically 280 °C+ range; follow the grade's datasheet.
  • Heated chamber / enclosure to control warping and build layer strength.
  • Hardened nozzle if the grade is carbon- or glass-filled (abrasive).
  • Strong bed adhesion — use a nylon-friendly surface or glue.
