SHINING 3D FreeScan Trak Pro2 — FreeTrak tracking bar with TE25 scanner
System Overview

FreeTrak + TE25 + Optional FreeProbe. One Complete Metrology Workflow.

Component 01
FreeTrak
Dual-Camera Tracking Bar
Dual-camera tracking system that continuously monitors the TE25 scanner position in real time via the TE25's built-in tracking targets. Placed on a tripod near the workpiece. Enables marker-free scanning — no targets on the part. The FreeTrak can be repositioned to extend the tracking volume for large objects without re-measuring reference artifacts, making multi-station large-part inspection significantly faster than traditional leapfrog methods.
Component 02
TE25
Handheld Laser 3D Scanner
Compact handheld scanner with 2×5MP industrial cameras. Three laser modes: 50 crossed lines (3,070,000 pts/s, 650×580 mm FOV), 7 parallel lines (fine detail, 0.01 mm min point distance), 1 single line (deep holes, 1:4 diameter-to-depth). Switch between all three modes mid-session without restarting. Tracked by FreeTrak via built-in targets — no markers needed on the part.
Component 03 — Optional
FreeProbe
Optical Contact CMM Probe
Optical-based portable CMM with ruby measuring tip. Operates within the full FreeTrak tracking volume. For geometric features the scanner cannot reach: blind holes, undercuts, obstructed reference points, hidden datums, and tight internal radii. Probing data merges seamlessly with scan data in FreeTrak software into a single unified inspection report — no separate CMM setup, no coordinate re-registration required.

Dynamic Referencing — No Markers on the Part
The FreeTrak Tracks the Scanner. You Scan Freely.

Traditional handheld scanning requires reflective targets applied to the workpiece — on a large or complex part this takes 20–40 minutes of setup time. The Trak Pro2 eliminates this entirely. The FreeTrak tracking bar uses dual cameras to continuously monitor the TE25's built-in targets and compute its exact position in real time. No markers on the part, no surface preparation, no adhesive residue. Move the TE25 freely around the workpiece in any orientation. For large-volume objects, the FreeTrak can be repositioned to extend the tracking range without re-measuring reference artifacts — a significant advantage over traditional marker-based systems for multi-station large-part inspection.

FreeTrak VPG integrates SHINING 3D's patented binocular video photogrammetry directly into the dynamic tracking workflow. Place marker balls and a magnetic scale bar — the system automatically optimizes the global coordinate frame and maintains it throughout the scan session. For a 4-meter aircraft panel: volumetric error ≈ 0.044 + (0.012 × 4) = 0.092 mm. For automotive body-in-white at 2 m: ≈ 0.044 + (0.012 × 2) = 0.068 mm. Global accuracy maintained without coded target arrays, without separate photogrammetry passes, and without interrupting the dynamic tracking workflow.

Where the FreeScan Trak Pro2 Gets Deployed

Automotive & Aerospace
Carbon Fiber, Large Assemblies & Body-in-White

Bugatti-Rimac uses the Trak Pro2 for inspection of carbon fiber monocoques — components where surface marker adhesion risks finish damage and traditional scanning setup time is unacceptable in a hypercar production environment. Marker-free dynamic referencing solves both. For body-in-white and large aerospace assemblies, 50-line mode covers the full structure rapidly; 7-line fine mode resolves critical fastener features and surface details. VPG maintains global accuracy across the full assembly. Aerospace first-article inspection with VDI/VDE 2634-documented results in a single session without repositioning markers or reference frames.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked — SHINING 3D FreeScan Trak Pro2

How is the Trak Pro2 different from a standard handheld scanner like the FreeScan Trio?
The key difference is the tracking system. A standard handheld scanner like the FreeScan Trio uses markers placed on the part for positional reference — the scanner tracks itself by reading those markers. The Trak Pro2 uses the FreeTrak bar on a separate tripod to track the TE25 scanner via the scanner's own built-in targets, so no markers need to be placed on the part at all. This is the defining advantage for expensive or delicate surfaces (carbon fiber, precision paint), for parts where adhesive residue is unacceptable, and for very large objects where placing thousands of markers would take hours. The tradeoff: the Trak Pro2 is a two-component system (scanner + tracker) requiring tripod setup, vs a handheld that operates standalone.
Can the FreeTrak tracking range be extended for very large objects?
Yes — the FreeTrak can be repositioned during a scan session to extend the tracking volume via leapfrog. Unlike traditional leapfrog techniques that require re-measuring reference artifacts at each new position, the Trak Pro2 maintains coordinate continuity when the FreeTrak is repositioned, significantly reducing the time and complexity of large-object multi-station scanning. For the largest objects (where a single FreeTrak station is insufficient), the Trak ProW with its 206.7 m³ single-station volume reduces the need for repositioning further.
What does the FreeProbe add to the system, and when do I need it?
The FreeProbe is an optical-based portable CMM probe that operates within the FreeTrak's full tracking volume. It captures precise geometric point data using a ruby tip for features the TE25 scanner cannot optically reach: blind holes, undercuts, deep recesses, tight internal radii, and obstructed datum features. Probing data merges with scan data in FreeTrak software — a single unified inspection report covering both scanned surfaces and probed geometric features. For aerospace and automotive first-article inspection where every datum must be verified, the FreeProbe closes the gap between scanning and CMM probing without requiring a separate coordinate system or dedicated CMM setup. If your inspection plan only requires surface scanning (no hidden features, no blind holes), the FreeProbe is optional.
How does Trak Pro2 accuracy compare to the Trak Nova and Trak ProW?
The Trak Pro2 achieves 0.023 mm accuracy with the TE25 scanner. The Trak Nova uses the UE Nova scanner which achieves 0.02 mm — marginally better on the specification. For most industrial applications the accuracy difference is not operationally meaningful. The more significant differences are: Trak Nova is wireless with hot-swappable batteries, the UE Nova scanner is detachable and usable standalone (the largest-FOV handheld available); Trak ProW extends tracking to 8.6 m with a 206.7 m³ single-station volume and wireless TE25W operation. Choose Trak Pro2 when wired reliability, FreeProbe integration, and proven field performance are priorities. Choose Trak Nova when wireless operation and standalone handheld flexibility matter more. Choose Trak ProW for the largest tracking range and wireless on very large equipment.
What inspection software is compatible with the Trak Pro2?
FreeTrak software handles the complete scan-to-mesh workflow with real-time visualization and data quality indicators. FreeTrak supports changing scan resolution mid-session without restarting the project and exports to all standard 3D formats. For inspection reporting, the Trak Pro2 integrates with PolyWorks Inspector, Geomagic Control X, and GOM Inspect — the three most widely used dimensional inspection platforms in aerospace and automotive. Rev1 can advise on software workflow, bundle pricing, and training for any of these platforms. Contact us for a complete configuration quote.
