Rev1 PLA Ultra tough 3D printing filament spool in black

Rev1 PLA Ultra is an upgraded, high-toughness PLA — far less brittle and much more impact-resistant than standard PLA, so it stands up to functional, load-bearing, and drop-prone parts that regular PLA would crack on. Best of all, it still prints as easily as PLA: low temps, no enclosure, and a standard 0.4 mm brass nozzle. Available in both 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm diameters and 6 colors. In-stock colors ship fast from Auburn Hills, Michigan — made-to-order colors ship in 1–3 weeks. Full specifications →

Material Science

Tough, impact-resistant PLA that prints like regular PLA.

Rev1 PLA Ultra is an upgraded PLA engineered for much higher toughness and impact resistance — far less brittle than standard PLA, so it survives functional, load-bearing, and drop-prone parts that ordinary PLA would crack on. And it keeps everything that makes PLA great: it prints low-warp on any FDM printer with no heated chamber or enclosure, holds fine detail, and gives off minimal odor. It’s the easiest way to get tougher functional parts — no ABS, PETG, or nylon hassle required.

Tough functional bracket 3D-printed in Rev1 PLA Ultra

Why makers choose PLA Ultra

PLA Ultra bridges the gap between standard PLA and engineering materials. Reach for it when regular PLA is too brittle for the job but you don’t want the enclosure, warping, or fumes that come with ABS or nylon. You get noticeably higher toughness and impact resistance with the exact same easy print process — on a classroom printer or a production farm.

  • Much tougher and more impact-resistant than standard PLA
  • Far less brittle — handles functional, load-bearing, drop-prone parts
  • Still prints as easily as PLA — no heated chamber or enclosure required
  • Standard 0.4 mm brass nozzle — no abrasive-ready hot end needed
Mechanical Performance

Tough and impact-resistant — know the trade-offs.

Rev1 PLA Ultra is engineered for higher toughness and impact resistance than standard PLA, so it holds up to functional and load-bearing parts that regular PLA would crack on — while staying stiff, dimensionally stable, and easy to print. Be honest about its one real limit: it’s still PLA-based, so heat resistance is low (~55–60°C). For hot, automotive, or outdoor parts, choose PETG, ABS, or ASA; for maximum structural strength, choose a reinforced grade like PA-CF or PC.

Durable mechanical gears 3D-printed in tough PLA Ultra

Key property summary

  • Tensile strength: ~55–65 MPa (typical tough-PLA range)
  • Flexural modulus: ~3.3 GPa — stiff for housings and fixtures
  • Elongation at break: ~8–15% — far tougher and less brittle than standard PLA
  • Glass transition: ~55–60°C — still low-heat; softens in hot cars or near motors
  • Density: ~1.24 g/cm³ — lighter than PETG or ABS

The color lineup

  • Black — the everyday workhorse, our highest-demand shade
  • White — clean, opaque, paints and finishes well
  • Natural — unpigmented natural for a raw material look
  • Gunmetal — deep metallic grey for a machined look
  • Red — bold, saturated red for visibility and accents
  • Cobalt Blue — rich, deep blue
  • Two diameters — every color ships in 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm

Every color prints at the same temperature and with the same settings. Select your color and diameter in the configurator above to see real-time availability and add to cart or place a made-to-order request.

Print Settings

Prints on any FDM printer with standard PLA settings.

Even though it’s much tougher, Rev1 PLA Ultra is just as forgiving to print as standard PLA. If you have a working PLA profile, use it as-is — low warp, no enclosure, and a standard 0.4 mm brass nozzle (it is not abrasive). Any generic PLA preset in your slicer is a reliable starting point for tough, clean, functional prints.

Printer Compatibility

Open-format: works on 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm FDM printers.

Because PLA Ultra prints at low temperatures with no warp and uses a standard brass nozzle, it is fully compatible with any desktop or large-format FDM printer — available in both 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm diameters, with no enclosure, no all-metal hot end, and no specialty hardware needed.

Handling & Storage

PLA Ultra absorbs moisture. Keep it sealed.

Like all PLA, PLA Ultra is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture from the air, leading to stringing, bubbling, and reduced surface quality. Rev1 PLA Ultra ships vacuum-sealed with a desiccant pack. After opening, reseal with desiccant or store in an airtight container.

Storage & drying guide

  • Storage: Sealed bag or airtight container with desiccant
  • Ideal humidity: below 20% RH
  • Shelf life (sealed): 12–24 months
  • Drying (if wet): 45–55°C for 4–6 hours in a filament dryer or oven
  • Signs of moisture: popping/crackling sounds during print, rough surface, blobs

Rev1 stocks filament dryers and vacuum-seal accessories. Ask about a bundle at checkout or call (248) 707-2950.

Material Comparison

PLA Ultra vs. Standard PLA vs. PETG

PLA Ultra gives you much higher toughness and impact resistance than standard PLA while printing just as easily — the best pick for functional, load-bearing, and drop-prone parts that don’t get hot. It’s still PLA-based, so heat resistance stays low; for hot, outdoor, or automotive parts, step up to PETG (or ABS/ASA), which run hotter but are harder to print.

FAQ

Common questions about Rev1 PLA Ultra

Is PLA Ultra hard to print?

No — it prints just as easily as standard PLA. It runs low-warp on any FDM printer with no heated chamber or enclosure, using a standard 0.4 mm brass nozzle (it’s not abrasive). Start with the generic PLA profile in your slicer: nozzle 210–230°C, bed 50–60°C, cooling fan on.

What makes PLA Ultra tougher than regular PLA?

PLA Ultra is an upgraded PLA engineered for much higher toughness and impact resistance — far less brittle than standard PLA, with roughly 2–3× the elongation and impact strength. That means it survives functional, load-bearing, and drop-prone parts that ordinary PLA would crack on, while still printing like PLA.

How heat-resistant is PLA Ultra?

It’s much tougher than standard PLA, but it’s still PLA-based, so heat resistance stays low — it softens around 55–60°C. It’s not for hot cars, near motors, or outdoor use. For heat or outdoor parts choose PETG, ABS, or ASA; for maximum structural strength choose a reinforced grade like PA-CF or PC.

Does PLA Ultra come in both 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm?

Yes. Every color is available in both 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm diameters — the 2.85 mm option suits large-format and industrial printers. Choose your diameter alongside your color in the buy box above.

Can I get volume pricing for case quantities?

Yes. Call (248) 707-2950 or use the quote form — Rev1 quotes case (10–12 spools) and pallet quantities with standing-order scheduling for print farms and production environments.

What if I need a color not listed?

PLA Ultra ships in 6 workhorse colors. Additional shades and specialty finishes may be available by special order — contact Rev1 with your color spec or Pantone number and we’ll check availability and MOQ.
