Flame-Retardant Polyphenylene-Ether Alloy — UL94 V-0, USA-Made

3DXTech ThermaX PPE+PS flame-retardant filament spool, black

A USA-made polyphenylene-ether / polystyrene (PPE+PS) alloy built from a UL94 V-0 rated flame-retardant base resin. It pairs high heat resistance with excellent chemical and hydrolytic stability and genuinely stable dielectric properties — an engineering filament for electrical, industrial, and outdoor parts that has to resist flame, moisture, and heat without warping. It prints on a standard hardened-free 0.4 mm nozzle. Full specifications →

Engineering-Grade PPE Alloy

Flame, heat, and chemistry — handled, without reinforcement.

ThermaX PPE+PS is a polyphenylene-ether alloy (a Noryl-type PPE/PS blend) that exhibits exceptional thermal, mechanical, and chemical resistance. Because its performance comes from the base polymer rather than a carbon- or glass-fiber filler, it is unreinforced — tough and dimensionally stable, with low isotropic shrinkage, and printable on a standard 0.4 mm nozzle with no hardened steel required. Its UL94 V-0 rated flame-retardant resin, stable dielectric properties, and hydrolytic stability make it a go-to for electrical enclosures, industrial parts, and components that live near heat, steam, or the weather. 3DXTech compounds it in the USA into consistent, printable filament with a published datasheet.

Why PPE+PS

Flame retardance, heat, and electrical stability.

ThermaX PPE+PS is built for demanding, engineering-grade applications where flame rating, heat, and dielectric stability matter more than raw stiffness. Numbers below are from the published TDS (Rev 1.0, ISO-tested).

UL94 V-0
Flame Retardant

Made from a UL94 V-0 rated flame-retardant base resin — self-extinguishing behavior for electrical and enclosure parts.

112°C
Heat Deflection (1.8 MPa)

Deflection temperature per ISO 75 (~120°C at 0.45 MPa) — holds shape in hot environments.

128°C
Glass Transition (Tg)

Measured by DSC — a high-Tg amorphous polymer with predictable behavior up to its softening range.

>10¹³ Ω/sq
Surface Resistance

Per ASTM D257 — a genuine insulator with stable dielectric properties for electrical parts.

67 MPa
Tensile Strength

Strong at break (ISO 527) with 12% elongation — tough and ductile, not brittle.

Low
Isotropic Shrinkage

Low, even shrinkage plus hydrolytic stability — dimensionally stable parts that resist warp and moisture.

Printing ThermaX PPE+PS

A high-temp hotend — but no hardened nozzle needed.

These are 3DXTech's recommended print settings. Because PPE+PS is unreinforced, there is no abrasive filler — a standard 0.4 mm nozzle is fine. Dry it before printing and give it a warm bed and, ideally, a heated chamber.

290–320°C
Extruder

Requires a genuine high-temp hotend; 3DXTech printed its test specimens at 310°C.

90–120°C
Bed

A high-temperature heated bed with a suitable adhesive for reliable first-layer grip.

50–80°C
Heated Chamber

Recommended — a warm, enclosed chamber improves layer bonding and reduces warp on larger parts.

Standard
Nozzle (0.4 mm min)

No hardened nozzle required — PPE+PS is unfilled and non-abrasive, so a standard brass nozzle works.

0.10 mm+
Layer Height

Runs down to fine 0.10 mm layers for detail, or thicker for speed and strength.

80°C / 4h
Dry Before Printing

Dry the filament and keep it dry for the cleanest surface and most consistent flow.

Where It's Used

Built for electrical, industrial, and outdoor end-use parts.

Because it is flame retardant, dimensionally stable, chemically and hydrolytically resistant, and a stable dielectric, ThermaX PPE+PS lands in parts that go into service — not just prototypes. It has long been used across aerospace, automotive, industrial, electronics, and telecommunications, and its UV resistance (rated F1 per UL 746C) makes it suitable for outdoor applications.

Electrical & electronics
Enclosures, connectors, and housings that need a UL94 V-0 flame rating and stable dielectric properties.
Automotive
Under-hood and interior parts that resist heat, fuels, oils, detergents, and solvents.
Aerospace
Lightweight (1.10 g/cc), flame-retardant components for demanding cabin and equipment applications.
Telecommunications
Insulating, dimensionally stable parts for equipment where signal and dielectric stability matter.
Industrial & fluid handling
Parts exposed to hot water, steam, and aqueous solutions — hydrolytic stability resists degradation.
Outdoor equipment

FAQ

3DXTech ThermaX PPE+PS — Common Questions

Do I need a special printer?

Yes — ThermaX PPE+PS prints around 290–320°C, so you need a genuine high-temp hotend and a high-temp heated bed (90–120°C). A heated chamber (50–80°C) is recommended for the best layer bonding and lowest warp, but you do not need a hardened nozzle.

Do I need a hardened nozzle?

No. Unlike carbon- or glass-fiber filaments, PPE+PS is unreinforced and non-abrasive, so a standard brass 0.4 mm nozzle is fine — one of the reasons it is easier to run than a filled engineering grade.

What makes PPE+PS worth it over ABS or PC?

Its UL94 V-0 flame-retardant base resin, stable dielectric properties, hydrolytic stability, and low isotropic shrinkage. If your part has to resist flame, moisture, or heat and stay dimensionally stable — especially electrical and outdoor parts — PPE+PS outperforms standard ABS and adds flame rating and chemical resistance PC does not match.

Is it flame retardant?

Yes — it is made from a UL94 V-0 rated flame-retardant base resin. Note that a UL rating applies to a tested specimen and geometry; printed parts should be validated for your specific application.

Do I have to dry it?

Yes. Like most engineering polymers it prints best dry — dry the filament at 80°C for about 4 hours before printing and store it in a dry box for the cleanest surface and most consistent flow.

What colors and sizes are available?

3DXTech currently ships ThermaX PPE+PS in black, 1.75 mm, on a 750 g reel. If you need natural color, another diameter, or larger reels for a production run, contact us — we can source and quote directly from 3DXTech.

Will the reel fit my AMS?

The 750 g reel is sized to clear popular automated material systems including the Bambu AMS, Creality CFS, and Anycubic ACE Pro. Check the reel infographic in the spool-specs section against your printer's spool holder or dry box before you buy.

Is PPE+PS the same as Noryl?

PPE/PS alloys are the 3D-printing counterpart to the Noryl family — a polyphenylene ether blended with polystyrene. ThermaX PPE+PS brings that proven engineering-resin chemistry — flame retardance, stable dielectric behavior, and hydrolytic resistance — to FDM/FFF filament.

Is it made in the USA?

Yes — 3DXTech manufactures ThermaX PPE+PS at its 68,000 sq ft facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with a published data sheet and lot traceability.
