UL94 V-0 flame-retardant nylon, validated by an accredited third-party lab.
3DXTech compounds OBSIDIAN™ FR-Nylon in Grand Rapids, Michigan on the proven Obsidian+CF v2 platform, with a published TDS and an accredited UL94 V-0 classification. Rev1 Technologies is your authorized 3DXTech reseller and US support partner, Auburn Hills, Michigan.
The proven Obsidian™ platform — now with UL94 V-0 flame protection.
As Obsidian™ became one of 3DXTech's most trusted materials for demanding engineering work, the platform was extended to meet the growing need for flame-retardant performance. OBSIDIAN™ FR-Nylon combines the same mechanical strength, print consistency, and reliability of the carbon-reinforced Obsidian+CF v2 base with enhanced fire protection — a genuine, affordable alternative to Markforged® Onyx-FR™ that prints on both the Markforged platform and open-source machines.

Structural strength and regulatory compliance in one material.
For manufacturers who need both mechanical performance and flame retardancy.
OBSIDIAN™ FR-Nylon achieves a UL94 V-0 rating at 3.0 mm from an accredited, third-party lab while holding excellent surface finish, dimensional stability, and repeatable results. Carbon-fiber reinforcement gives it a high tangent modulus and a 164 °C heat-deflection temperature, so parts stay stiff and stable under load and heat — ideal where structural performance and fire safety both matter.
Real engineering properties, from a published TDS.
3DXTech's published OBSIDIAN™ FR-Nylon values (TDS v1.1), third-party-lab tested. FDM parts are anisotropic, so tensile and modulus values vary by print orientation — representative figures shown below.
Vertical burn test at 3.0 mm (UL94) — the top self-extinguishing classification, from an accredited lab.
Deflection temp at 66 psi (ASTM D648) — parts stay stable at elevated temperatures.
Notched Izod (ASTM D256) — genuine toughness for functional parts.
Edge orientation (ASTM D638) — carbon-reinforced strength; varies by orientation.
Edge orientation (ASTM D790) with a ~1990 MPa tangent modulus — stiff under bending load.
ISO 1183 — light, carbon-reinforced parts with a premium matte finish.
A demanding, high-performance material — print it right.
3DXTech's recommended conditions. As a carbon-fiber-reinforced nylon, OBSIDIAN™ FR-Nylon is abrasive and hygroscopic — a hardened nozzle and proper drying are required, and a heated chamber is recommended for best results.
High-temperature nylon range — an all-metal hotend is required.
A hot bed with a nylon-friendly adhesive for reliable first-layer grip.
A ~65 °C chamber improves layer adhesion and dimensional stability.
Carbon fiber is abrasive — a hardened steel (or ruby) nozzle is required to avoid rapid wear.
Run 0.20 mm or higher for the best strength and surface finish.
Nylon is very hygroscopic — dry at 70 °C for ~6 hours and print from a dry box.
Safety-critical parts that must pass fire and structural requirements.

FAQ
3DXTech OBSIDIAN FR-Nylon — Common Questions
What flame rating does it achieve?
OBSIDIAN™ FR-Nylon achieves a UL94 V-0 classification at 3.0 mm thickness, verified by an accredited third-party lab. V-0 is the top self-extinguishing rating in the UL94 vertical-burn test.
Is it a Markforged Onyx-FR alternative?
Yes. It's formulated to integrate seamlessly into the Markforged® platform as an affordable alternative to Onyx-FR™, and 3DXTech's third-party testing shows comparable or better mechanical performance. It also prints on open-source machines.
Do I need a hardened nozzle?
Yes. It's carbon-fiber-reinforced and abrasive, so a hardened steel (or ruby) nozzle is required to avoid rapid wear. Print at 265–285°C with an all-metal hotend.
Do I need a heated chamber?
A heated chamber (~65°C) is recommended for best layer adhesion and dimensional stability, along with a hot bed at 90–110°C. It can print on capable open-bed machines, but enclosed/heated-chamber printers give the best results.
Does it need drying?
Yes — nylon is very hygroscopic. Dry at 70°C for about 6 hours and print from a dry box for the best surface finish and mechanical performance.
Is it made in the USA?
Yes — 3DXTech manufactures and compounds OBSIDIAN™ FR-Nylon in its 68,000 sq-ft facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with published data and lot traceability.
